SUMMARY:Plant Science Central Conference
DESCRIPTION:A joint meeting of: \nThe New Zealand Institute of Agricultural and Horticultural Science (NZIAHS) \n New Zealand Branch of the International Association of Plant Biotechnology (IAPB) \nNew Zealand Society of Plant Biologists (NZSPB) \n  \nTuesday 4th to Thursday 6th July 2023 \nAgHort Lecture Theatre\, Massey University\, Palmerston North\, New Zealand \nKey dates:\nFri 12 May Abstract deadline (Contact secretariat@agscience.org.nz for Abstract template)\nFri 26 May Acceptance of oral and poster papers\nFri  16 June Early registration deadline \nThis is the sixth biennial meeting of three plant science societies. Members of any of the three participating societies qualify for discounted registration and links are available on the website. \nThis year sessions will include the following research themes: \n\nForage biotechnology\nClimate resilient agriculture and horticulture\nNovel for food\nGermplasm conservation\nFruit crop physiology\nFloral development and timing\nPlant stress resilience mechanisms\nPostharvest\nAgriculture and horticulture for development\n\nbut as always we welcome presentations on any aspect of Plant Biology. \nAbstracts (up to 250 words) will be called for on the website and should be submitted by Friday 12 May 2023. Notification of provisional acceptance as oral or poster presentations will be given by Friday 26 May 2023 and registration must be completed by Friday 16 June 2023 to qualify for our generous early bird discount. After that date only poster presentations can be accepted; so if you are accepted for oral presentation but do not pay at the earlybird rate then your presentation will automatically change to a poster. \nThis conference is intended to be face-to-face. All presentations should be in person. \nConference dinner and Awards ceremony for any recipients present will be held at Massey University on Wednesday 5th July 2023 at a cost of $100.00. All three societies will hold their Annual General Meetings on 5th July before the dinner. \nA PDF of the complete programme can be downloaded  HERE   \n  \nPlant Science Central Conference is sponsored by

SUMMARY:Gene Editing Forum\, Canterbury 2020
DESCRIPTION:The topic of this forum ‘Gene Editing’ has been chosen because the report from the Royal Society Expert Panel on Gene Editing recommended that there was an ‘urgent need for wide and well-informed discussion and debate about gene editing’. Since the release of that report\, the issue seems to have ‘gone quiet’\, and there appears to be very little indication of where we might go from here. We are looking to take the next step – how might we start to think about the use of this technology in the future? The forum will cover how and why we might use gene editing technology in plants\, animals and pests. \nFollow this link to view the programme

SUMMARY:New Breeding Technologies for perennial crops
DESCRIPTION:The Auckland Section of the New Zealand Institute of Agricultural & Horticultural Science presents an early evening seminar to hear Prof Andrew Allan speak on “New Breeding Technologies for perennial crops”\n\nAndrew Allan received his PhD in Biochemistry at Cambridge University. He is now a Professor with the University of Auckland\, and runs a group at Plant and Food Research. He has twice received New Zealand’s top prize for plant biology (NZSPP\, Roger Slack Award)\, as well as the Chinese Academy of Science President’s International Award.\n\nHe is currently Programme Leader of a project which aims to speed up breeding of perennial plants by using rapid flowering and gene editing. These “New Breeding Technologies (NBTs)” produce new cultivars with large changes in consumer and grower traits. They differ from GM crops in that no new DNA is introduced. World-wide\, national regulatory authorities struggle with how to define (or even measure) these plants; this provides both a barrier to adoption (New Zealand) or an opportunity to be first to market (America and Australia).

SUMMARY:The establishment of Te Uru Rakau and planning for the One Billion Trees
DESCRIPTION:Auckland Sections of the\nInstitute of Forestry\nand The Institute of Agricultural & Horticultural Science\nSeminar \nPresentation by MPI’s \n \nWarwick Foran \nto discuss developments surrounding both \nThe establishment of Te Uru Rakau (NZ’s new Forest Agency) and planning for the One Billion Trees \nWarwick will provide answers to those questions at the fore-front of our minds: \nWhere is the land (for One Billion Trees) and how will it be acquired? \nHave we got the seed\, the nursery skills – and the manpower for planting & releasing? \nWhy Rotorua for Te Uru Rakau? \nWhat will be the link between Te Uru Rakau and  the Forest Advisory Group? \nWarwick Foran is General Manager of Crown Forestry\, a unit within the newly formed (interim) Branch of the Ministry for Primary Industries\, Te Uru Rakau. Warwick is a career forester with more than forty years experience.  He has worked in the NZ Forest Service\, the Ministry of Forestry\, and the Ministry of Agriculture & Forestry. \nCrown Forestry administers the Crown’s interest in forestry leases on Maori land\, residual state forests and other forestry assets. Since December 2017\, has been mandated to enter into new commercial forestry ventures on private land as part of the Government’s One Billion Trees Programme. \nThe One Billion Trees is a $100 million-plus annual turnover commercial forestry business harvesting and selling more than 0.8M cubic metres of logs annually\, and with forests and land assets from Northland to South Westland. \n  \nPlease RSVP to the organiser Jeremy.Keating@cbre.co.nz
