SUMMARY:2023 NZIAHS Canterbury Forum: Building Resilient Production Systems
DESCRIPTION:The devastation wreaked by Cyclone Gabrielle illustrated failings in the resilience of not just our physical infrastructure\, our land management systems\, and communications systems\, but also illustrated how many of our key primary industries are less resilient than they may need to be in future. This forum will address the resilience of our agricultural and horticultural production systems\, with emphasis on not just the systems themselves\, but also on the resilience of their supporting infrastructure\, science\, and financial systems. \nInvited speakers to identify solutions\, not just problems. We want to see current examples of resilient primary production systems. \nTopics to be covered will include:\n– How do we build resilience to adverse weather events such as Cyclone Gabrielle? \n– How do we build resilience to deal with rapid market change that desires more ecologically and ethically responsible production systems? \n– How can we protect against major seismic or volcanic events? \n– How do we increase agricultural and horticultural processing and export infrastructure security? \n– How do we improve financial resilience to protect from inflation\, rapid interest rate change and exchange rate fluctuation. \n– How do we protect against the loss of agrichemical solutions to managing pests and disease\, and in the face of new incursions from biosecurity breeches? \n– How do we improve labour supply\, including producing a skilled scientific workforce and technical capability? \nTo Register or for more information please contact\nJenny Taylor \nsecretariat@agscience.org.nz \n0274 779821 \nLINK TO FORUM PROGRAMME

Members of any of the three participating societies qualify for discounted registration and links are available on the website. \nThis year sessions will include the following research themes: \n\nForage biotechnology\nClimate resilient agriculture and horticulture\nNovel for food\nGermplasm conservation\nFruit crop physiology\nFloral development and timing\nPlant stress resilience mechanisms\nPostharvest\nAgriculture and horticulture for development\n\nbut as always we welcome presentations on any aspect of Plant Biology. \nAbstracts (up to 250 words) will be called for on the website and should be submitted by Friday 12 May 2023. Notification of provisional acceptance as oral or poster presentations will be given by Friday 26 May 2023 and registration must be completed by Friday 16 June 2023 to qualify for our generous early bird discount. After that date only poster presentations can be accepted; so if you are accepted for oral presentation but do not pay at the earlybird rate then your presentation will automatically change to a poster. \nThis conference is intended to be face-to-face. All presentations should be in person. \nConference dinner and Awards ceremony for any recipients present will be held at Massey University on Wednesday 5th July 2023 at a cost of $100.00. All three societies will hold their Annual General Meetings on 5th July before the dinner. \nA PDF of the complete programme can be downloaded  HERE   \n  \nPlant Science Central Conference is sponsored by

SUMMARY:Gene Editing Forum\, Canterbury 2020
DESCRIPTION:The topic of this forum ‘Gene Editing’ has been chosen because the report from the Royal Society Expert Panel on Gene Editing recommended that there was an ‘urgent need for wide and well-informed discussion and debate about gene editing’. Since the release of that report\, the issue seems to have ‘gone quiet’\, and there appears to be very little indication of where we might go from here. We are looking to take the next step – how might we start to think about the use of this technology in the future? The forum will cover how and why we might use gene editing technology in plants\, animals and pests. \nFollow this link to view the programme

SUMMARY:New Breeding Technologies for perennial crops
DESCRIPTION:The Auckland Section of the New Zealand Institute of Agricultural & Horticultural Science presents an early evening seminar to hear Prof Andrew Allan speak on “New Breeding Technologies for perennial crops”\n\nAndrew Allan received his PhD in Biochemistry at Cambridge University. He is now a Professor with the University of Auckland\, and runs a group at Plant and Food Research. He has twice received New Zealand’s top prize for plant biology (NZSPP\, Roger Slack Award)\, as well as the Chinese Academy of Science President’s International Award.\n\nHe is currently Programme Leader of a project which aims to speed up breeding of perennial plants by using rapid flowering and gene editing. These “New Breeding Technologies (NBTs)” produce new cultivars with large changes in consumer and grower traits. They differ from GM crops in that no new DNA is introduced. World-wide\, national regulatory authorities struggle with how to define (or even measure) these plants; this provides both a barrier to adoption (New Zealand) or an opportunity to be first to market (America and Australia).

SUMMARY:11th Australia-New Zealand Climate Change & Business Conference
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \nAfter years of slow progress in climate policy\, the new government has set New Zealand on a path of profound change. A Climate Commission will plan and monitor the transition to net zero by 2050. This bold target implies fundamental disruption to business as usual. We can expect big land use changes and the rapid deployment of new technologies and innovations across the economy and society. \nThe 2018 conference will reveal the implications of these changes. Ministers will present a stock-take of progress in the plenary and we’ll run focused workshops on the more challenging issues. The Paris rulebook\, the responsibilities of managers and directors\, new financial reporting norms and sources of transition financing will all be explored by experts.\nAdaptation risks for New Zealand are burgeoning with big implications for communities and insurers. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nLink to the EDS website \n\nLink to the Conference website and registration

SUMMARY:Climate change: stormy weather ahead
DESCRIPTION:What is science telling us about the actions we can collectively take to reduce the rate of climate change? \nWith the hottest January on record and severe weather events causing flood and coastal damage throughout Aotearoa New Zealand\, are these the signs that global warming caused by emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases due to human activities are having a clear impact? \nFollowing the announcement that the United States plan to cease their participation in the 2015 Paris Agreement\, will the rest of the world be able to manage the responsibility of mitigating climate change without the world’s largest economy? What does New Zealand need to be doing now? \n\n\n\n\nAbout the speaker \n \nScottish academic Professor Jim Skea co-chairs IPCC Working Group III\, the branch of the IPCC that looks at the actions that can be taken to reduce the rate of climate change. He is also a founding member of the UK’s Committee on Climate Change. With research interests in energy and technological innovation\, he is a highly respected and longstanding contributor to global climate change research and policy-making. \nJim is in New Zealand for a meeting of the IPCC’s Special Report on Climate Change and Land\, one of three Special Reports that the IPCC will publish in the next two years. \nThe IPCC was founded in 1988 to assess research on climate change. Their Fifth Assessment report was released in 2014 and subsequently\, at the 2015 United Nations Climate Change conference\, the Paris Agreement was negotiated and resulted in 174 (out of 195) countries agreeing to strengthen the global response to the threat of climate change. \nFree Public Admission.\nThis will be a popular event\, guarantee your seat(s) by registering now. \nFor comprehensive resources on the implications of climate change\, the impact on health\, and mitigation options for New Zealand\, visit royalsociety.org.nz/climate-change-and-new-zealand \nViews that are expressed at this event may not reflect those of Royal Society Te Apārangi. \nphoto credit. Wellington South Coast storm damage\, Dave Allen\, NIWA \n\n\n\n\nORGANISATION\nRoyal Society Te Apārangi \n\n\nVENUE/DATE\nTe Papa\, Soundings Theatre 55 Cable Street\, Te Aro\, Wellington\, 6011 \n6:00pm Wed 21 March\, 2018 – 7:00pm Wed 21 March\, 2018 \n\n\n\nBook now\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSaveSave \nSaveSave
