SUMMARY:Regaining Consumer Trust in a Digital Age
DESCRIPTION:Presenter:    Dr John Roche\, Chief Science Adviser\, Ministry for Primary Industries\nJohn was appointed Chief Scientist in June 2018 to provide strategic science advice across MPI. He leads the organisation’s Science Forum\, which works to promote MPI’s scientific expertise. John also Chairs the independent Mycoplasma bovis Strategic Science Advisory Group\, set up to help accelerate eradication of this devastating cattle disease from New Zealand\, and the Kauri Dieback SSAG which focuses on the science needed to protect Aotearoa’s Kauri. \nJohn was previously DairyNZ’s Principal Scientist for Animal Science and an Adjunct Professor at Lincoln University. He’s also held science appointments with the National Centre for Dairy Production Research in Ireland\, the Department of Primary Industries in Australia\, and the University of Tasmania. He is also Managing Director of Down to Earth Advice Ltd. \nWidely published and a regular contributor to international science and farming conferences\, John has an Honours degree in Agricultural Science\, a Masters in Farm Systems and Pasture Management\, and a PhD in Animal Nutrition. \nAll welcome.

SUMMARY:New Breeding Technologies for perennial crops
DESCRIPTION:The Auckland Section of the New Zealand Institute of Agricultural & Horticultural Science presents an early evening seminar to hear Prof Andrew Allan speak on “New Breeding Technologies for perennial crops”\n\nAndrew Allan received his PhD in Biochemistry at Cambridge University. He is now a Professor with the University of Auckland\, and runs a group at Plant and Food Research. He has twice received New Zealand’s top prize for plant biology (NZSPP\, Roger Slack Award)\, as well as the Chinese Academy of Science President’s International Award.\n\nHe is currently Programme Leader of a project which aims to speed up breeding of perennial plants by using rapid flowering and gene editing. These “New Breeding Technologies (NBTs)” produce new cultivars with large changes in consumer and grower traits. They differ from GM crops in that no new DNA is introduced. World-wide\, national regulatory authorities struggle with how to define (or even measure) these plants; this provides both a barrier to adoption (New Zealand) or an opportunity to be first to market (America and Australia).

DESCRIPTION:Presenter:    Alan Campbell\, Waikato Regional Council \nAlan graduated with a BSC in Earth Sciences from the University of Waikato. He worked on the Clutha Development Environmental impact assessment and the National Land Resource Inventory in the Bay of Plenty and Central Plateau before joining the Hauraki Catchment Board as a Soil Conservator. He has continued in a variety of roles with the Waikato Regional Council since its formation and is currently Leader of the Land Management Advisory Services Team at Waikato Regional Council. The team’s purpose is to work with the agriculture industry to improve environmental performance\, and to help farmers to meet or exceed their Healthy Rivers obligations.

DESCRIPTION:What is science telling us about the actions we can collectively take to reduce the rate of climate change? \nWith the hottest January on record and severe weather events causing flood and coastal damage throughout Aotearoa New Zealand\, are these the signs that global warming caused by emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases due to human activities are having a clear impact? \nFollowing the announcement that the United States plan to cease their participation in the 2015 Paris Agreement\, will the rest of the world be able to manage the responsibility of mitigating climate change without the world’s largest economy? What does New Zealand need to be doing now? \n\n\n\n\nAbout the speaker \n \nScottish academic Professor Jim Skea co-chairs IPCC Working Group III\, the branch of the IPCC that looks at the actions that can be taken to reduce the rate of climate change. He is also a founding member of the UK’s Committee on Climate Change. With research interests in energy and technological innovation\, he is a highly respected and longstanding contributor to global climate change research and policy-making. \nJim is in New Zealand for a meeting of the IPCC’s Special Report on Climate Change and Land\, one of three Special Reports that the IPCC will publish in the next two years. \nThe IPCC was founded in 1988 to assess research on climate change.
