Welcome to The New Zealand Institute of Agricultural & Horticultural Science (NZIAHS)

NZIAHS exists to promote:

  • the professional interests of members and the views of professional agriculturalists and horticulturists
  • the development of science and technology in agriculture and horticulture
  • the use of agricultural and horticultural technology

NZIAHS represents approx 400 members working in all aspects of the primary sector including research and teaching in universities, Crown Research Institutes, private sector companies, management consultancy and tertiary study. Our corporate members include leading companies in the sector.

The Institute has active sections in Christchurch, Palmerston North, Hamilton and Auckland. Here members can participate in presentations, field trips, and support national and international forums and conferences. NZIAHS is the official body in New Zealand affiliated to the International Society of Horticultural Science and it is a member society of the New Zealand Royal Society. AgScience magazine is published several times a year. The blog provides many news items from right across the spectrum of interests of our members.

Members are eligible for awards and in some cases, support for conference attendance or research projects.

The New Zealand Institute of Agricultural Science Inc was incorporated under the Incorporated Societies Act 1908 on the 10th day of May 1957 and was re-registered to become a society under the Incorporated Societies Act 2022 on 29th August 2025 and changed its name to New Zealand Institute of Agricultural and Horticultural Science Incorporated on the 7th day of December 2024 . Registration Number 216358. The Institute is registered as a charitable entity under the Charities Act 2005 on 30 June 2008. Registration Number CC37166.
