Background: Sir Arthur Ward KBE (1906 -1993) was a New Zealand accountant, dairy researcher and administrator, company director and university chancellor. He was born in Spalding, Lincolnshire, England, in 1906. Sir Arthur was chancellor of Massey University from 1976 to 1980.

Purpose: This trophy was donated by Sir Arthur Ward to encourage communication of agricultural and horticultural science. It is to provide recognition to a member who has, through writing, public speaking, radio, television or practical demonstration, made a significant contribution to the extension and adoption of agricultural or horticultural science.

Value: A Maori ceremonial trophy is presented to the awardee to keep for one year and the awardee is given a Maori walking stick.

Procedure: All nominations must be made on the NZIAHS nomination form. Nominations should include curriculum vitae and any other supporting material that highlights the nominee’s contribution to communicating agricultural and horticultural science.

Selection: Applications are first reviewed by the Awards Committee and then further reviewed by Council.
