A new purpose-built Genomics Research Building was officially opened at the Bioeconomy Science Institute Maiangi Taiao’s Lincoln campus by Dr Shane Reti, Minister of Science, Innovation and Technology.
The new building contains a PC2 laboratory purpose-built to safely support biological research involving microorganisms. PC2 stands for Physical Containment level 2, meaning that low-risk organisms can be studied there in secure containment.
The laboratory will support projects such as:
- biological methods to investigate and manage invasive species
- studying the biodiversity of our flora and fauna.
It will enable a wide range of biological research projects such as high-throughput eDNA analysis, and the extra capacity will allow multiple genomics research projects to run in parallel.
The project was developed through close collaboration between scientists, designers, and engineers.
Bioeconomy Science Institute chief executive Mark Piper said the new lab would significantly increases the Institute’s ability to provide cutting-edge science:
“With demand for molecular and biological research continuing to grow, the lab will support science that delivers long-term benefits for Aotearoa New Zealand – strengthening biosecurity, advancing biodiversity knowledge, and underpinning a resilient, sustainable bioeconomy,” he says.
Highlights:
- The new building includes 250m² of ground floor laboratory space and a 110m² mezzanine housing plant and services.
- The design has been developed around clear workflows and safety in design, reducing the risk of cross-contamination and supporting good laboratory practice.
- The laboratory meets PC2 compliance requirements while remaining flexible and adaptable for future research needs.
- PC2 areas are maintained at negative air pressure, ensuring airflow is always into the laboratory.
