The New Zealand Agricultural Greenhouse Gas Research Centre (NZAGRC) is seeking expressions of interest for two new governance positions – an independent chair and member for the newly established NZAGRC Governance Group.
The NZAGRC, estsablished in 2009, is a collaboration involving the leading New Zealand research providers working in the agricultural greenhouse gas area (five Crown Research Institutes, two universities and DairyNZ) and the Pastoral Greenhouse Gas Research Consortium (PGgRc).
It coordinates and invests in New Zealand research programmes aimed at reducing methane and nitrous oxide emissions from agricultural systems and maintaining or enhancing carbon in the soils that support those systems.
It partners with Iwi/Māori to support their aspirations to be leaders in transitioning towards a low emissions primary sector and it has a dedicated outreach programme to ensure information from our research is shared with New Zealand farmers and growers and used to help inform extension efforts led by sector organisations.
Acting on the advice of an independent review, the NZAGRC is establishing a new six-person governance group. An independent chair and an independent member are required.
The governance group will be supported by the centre’s director and science, Māori and stakeholder advisory groups.
Over the next five years, the NZAGRC will be focused on discovering and developing products, tools and knowledge that enables the practical and cost-effective reduction of agricultural greenhouse gas emissions and making those available to New Zealand farmers and growers.
The governance group will be responsible for implementing the NZAGRC’s new governance structure, setting strategic direction and priorities, developing board policies and expectations for management, identifying and managing risks, and monitoring and evaluating the performance of the organisation.
The focus of the chair and independent member will be to add value to the work of the NZAGRC, ensuring its relevance to, and delivery of impact for, the primary sector and New Zealand.
The NZAGRC received funding of $5m a year from MPI for the 2009-2019 period. In 2019, the Government doubled its investment in the NZAGRC, with funding to 2025 provided jointly by MPI and MBIE.
The NZAGRC was created to build on existing research, working with existing organisations to create an effective, trusted partnership to bring cost-effective, simple solutions to New Zealand farms, and contribute world leading results to the international science community.
It is a “virtual” centre and the research it funds is carried out by researchers working in their own organisations. The NZAGRC is physically located on the AgResearch Grasslands Campus in Palmerston North.
